ANPR

ANPR

ANPR, or Automatic Number Plate Recognition, uses specialised cameras and recognition software to capture vehicle number plates and convert them into usable vehicle identification data.

AZTÖR designs, supplies, installs, integrates, upgrades and maintains ANPR solutions for residential communities, commercial buildings, offices, hotels, hospitals, warehouses, logistics facilities, industrial sites and managed parking facilities across the UAE.

For vehicle access applications, ANPR can provide convenient entry without requiring the driver to present a card or handheld remote. When an approaching number plate is recognised and authorised by the connected access system, an opening command can be sent to the automatic parking barrier or gate.

ANPR should not be treated as simply installing a normal CCTV camera beside an entrance. Reliable recognition depends on the complete capture environment, including camera selection, lens, mounting position, plate size in the image, viewing angle, vehicle speed, illumination, lane width and software configuration.

AZTÖR provides a free site inspection for applicable ANPR projects. We review the entry and exit geometry, vehicle approach, lane width, expected speed, mounting locations, lighting, barriers or gates, network infrastructure and required access workflow before recommending the system.

UAE number plates vary by Emirate, vehicle category and plate format. The selected ANPR platform should therefore support the relevant regional plates and should be configured and tested for the actual vehicles expected at the site.

ANPR performance should be assessed against the selected manufacturer's documented capabilities and real site conditions rather than promising a universal recognition percentage for every installation.

Camera positioning is one of the most important parts of an ANPR installation. Excessive horizontal or vertical angles, insufficient plate size, obstruction or unsuitable distance can reduce the quality of the captured number plate.

Vehicle speed is also relevant. An entrance where vehicles stop at a barrier has different capture requirements from a road or access lane where vehicles continue moving.

Lighting conditions can change significantly between daytime and night. Headlights, reflections, shadows, direct sunlight and bright backgrounds can all affect plate capture, so suitable ANPR cameras use dedicated imaging and illumination technologies according to the application.

At basement entrances, the transition between bright outdoor sunlight and a darker parking area can create challenging exposure conditions. Camera placement and imaging settings should be designed around this transition.

At night, suitable infrared or manufacturer-specific illumination can help capture number plates without relying entirely on general site lighting.

ANPR cameras can be installed for a single controlled lane or as part of a multi-lane vehicle access system. Each lane should be assessed individually rather than assuming one camera can reliably cover several unrelated vehicle paths.

For residential communities, authorised resident number plates can be registered in the access-management platform. When a registered vehicle approaches, the system can verify the plate and operate the connected gate or parking barrier according to configured permissions.

Temporary visitor number plates can also be registered through compatible visitor-management systems. This can allow approved visitors to enter during a defined period without requiring a permanent remote control.

Commercial properties can use ANPR for employee, tenant, contractor and visitor vehicle access according to the site's access policy.

ANPR can also work alongside UHF long-range vehicle access. For example, regular users can carry a UHF credential while ANPR provides vehicle identification or another layer of verification.

Where higher access assurance is required, suitable systems can use more than one condition before authorising entry. The exact logic depends on the selected access-control platform and security requirements.

ANPR can be integrated with automatic parking barriers, sliding gates, swing gates and other compatible vehicle entrance systems.

The ANPR system identifies the vehicle; it does not physically control the lane by itself. The connected barrier or gate provides the physical vehicle-control function after receiving an authorised command.

Vehicle loops or other presence detectors can also be used at the lane. These devices perform a different function from ANPR by confirming the physical presence or passage of a vehicle.

Safety photocells, loops and other appropriate safety devices remain necessary where required. Successful number-plate recognition should never be treated as a replacement for barrier or gate safety detection.

For Smart Parking Management, ANPR can provide vehicle identification at entry and exit while the parking platform manages permissions, occupancy, visitors, parking sessions or other operational functions.

For ticketless parking, the number plate can be used as the reference for a parking session on a compatible platform. The system records the vehicle at entry and associates the relevant parking transaction with the plate.

In paid parking environments, ANPR can integrate with Parking Revenue Systems. Once the applicable parking payment or validation is completed, the recognised vehicle can be authorised for exit according to the configured workflow.

ANPR itself does not calculate parking charges or process financial transactions. Those functions belong to the connected parking-management, revenue and payment platforms.

ANPR can also complement Parking Ticketing Systems. A facility can use physical tickets together with number-plate recognition for additional vehicle-session information, or migrate toward a ticketless workflow where technically suitable.

Vehicle entry and exit records can be searchable on suitable ANPR platforms. Authorised operators may be able to search by number plate, date, time, lane, camera or other system-specific criteria.

Watchlists or authorised and restricted vehicle lists can also be configured on suitable platforms. How these functions are used should follow the customer's legitimate security requirements, permissions and applicable policies.

ANPR can provide an event image or associated video reference where supported by the selected platform, allowing an authorised operator to review the vehicle connected with a recognition event.

For security applications, ANPR can be integrated with compatible CCTV or Video Management Systems so vehicle events can be reviewed alongside surveillance footage.

At logistics and industrial sites, ANPR can support controlled vehicle movements for registered trucks, staff vehicles, contractors or approved fleets.

ANPR can also assist with vehicle entry records at warehouses and logistics facilities, although it should not be confused with a complete logistics, fleet-management or weighbridge system.

The system can be integrated with intercoms or guard controls so vehicles that are not automatically authorised can be handled through a separate verification process.

This exception workflow is important. A dirty, damaged, obscured or otherwise unreadable plate should not leave the entrance without a controlled method for authorised manual verification.

Number-plate databases also require proper administration. Old resident vehicles, former employees, expired visitors and obsolete permissions should be removed or updated according to the customer's access policy.

Where the platform supports schedules, vehicle permissions can be restricted to defined dates, times or access zones.

Multi-entry properties can centrally manage authorised plates across several gates or parking entrances where supported by the selected software.

Multi-site management may also be possible for organisations operating several facilities, subject to the capabilities and architecture of the selected ANPR platform.

ANPR systems can be deployed using on-premises or networked architectures, and suitable platforms may also provide cloud-connected functions. The appropriate architecture depends on customer IT policy, cybersecurity, connectivity, integration and data requirements.

Because number plates and access records can relate to identifiable vehicle users, ANPR deployments should consider applicable UAE privacy and data-protection requirements. Access to records, retention periods and system permissions should be appropriate to the purpose of the installation.

ANPR equipment used in Dubai security applications may also be subject to applicable SIRA requirements depending on the project and use case. Required equipment approvals and system design should be checked for the specific installation rather than assuming every ANPR product is automatically approved.

For outdoor UAE installations, equipment should be selected for the expected heat, direct sunlight, dust, sand, humidity and environmental exposure. Camera housings, brackets, connectors and network equipment should suit the installation location.

Camera brackets need to remain mechanically stable. Small changes in camera angle caused by vibration, accidental movement or loose mounting can affect number-plate capture.

Regular cleaning is also important in dusty environments. Dirt on the camera window or illumination area can gradually reduce image quality even when the camera remains online.

Existing entrances can often be upgraded to ANPR without replacing a serviceable automatic barrier or gate. AZTÖR can assess the existing operator and controller to determine whether an appropriate interface is available.

Common ANPR faults include plates not being recognised, incorrect reads, delayed barrier opening, recognised vehicles being rejected, cameras going offline or entry and exit records failing to synchronise correctly.

The source of the problem can be the camera, positioning, illumination, network, recognition software, database permissions, access controller, integration or the physical barrier itself.

AZTÖR can troubleshoot the complete chain from vehicle capture through recognition and access authorisation to the final gate or barrier command.

Preventive maintenance can include camera cleaning, mounting inspection, image verification, illumination checks, network health, recognition testing, access database review, controller communication and functional testing with the connected barrier or gate.

AZTÖR provides ANPR installation, integration, upgrades, troubleshooting and maintenance across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain, with suitable vehicle-access and smart parking solutions available across the wider GCC.
