Video Storage
Video Storage is one of the most important parts of a CCTV system. Cameras may capture excellent video, but the surveillance system is only useful if footage is recorded reliably, retained for the required period and available when an incident needs to be investigated.
AZTÖR Automation designs CCTV Video Storage solutions for offices, warehouses, factories, malls, hotels, residential communities, data centres, logistics facilities and large multi-camera surveillance systems across the UAE.
Storage should never be selected by hard-drive size alone. The required capacity depends on the number of cameras, resolution, frame rate, video compression, recording schedule, scene activity and required retention period.
For smaller CCTV systems, storage may be provided directly through surveillance-grade hard drives installed inside an NVR. Larger installations may require multi-bay NVRs, RAID storage, NAS, dedicated recording servers or enterprise storage architecture.
AZTÖR calculates storage based on the actual recording requirement. Continuous 24-hour recording, motion-based recording and event-based recording can produce very different storage requirements even when the same cameras are used.
High-resolution and AI CCTV systems require additional planning. 4K cameras, Multi-Sensor Cameras, PTZ Cameras and large camera networks can generate significant recording bandwidth, so both storage capacity and write performance need to be considered.
For critical installations, RAID and redundant storage options can improve resilience against individual drive failures. RAID is not a substitute for backup, however, and the appropriate redundancy strategy depends on the importance of the recorded footage.
Cloud and hybrid storage can also be considered where appropriate. Selected footage or events can be stored through cloud-connected platforms while local NVR or server storage continues to provide primary recording.
AZTÖR can upgrade existing CCTV storage where retention has become too short, additional cameras have been installed, hard drives are failing or the existing recorder has reached its supported storage capacity.

CCTV storage should be calculated from the actual recording workload rather than using a fixed number of days per hard drive. Camera count, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, compression, recording mode and retention period all affect capacity. RAID also reduces usable storage compared with raw installed capacity.
