Network Switches
Network Switches form the communication backbone of an IP CCTV system. They connect cameras, NVRs, VMS servers and other network devices while suitable PoE switches can also deliver power directly to CCTV cameras through the same Ethernet cable.

For CCTV installations, choosing a switch by port count alone is not enough. Camera bandwidth, PoE power consumption, uplink capacity, transmission distance, network topology and future expansion all need to be considered.
PoE switches simplify IP camera installations by carrying network data and electrical power through compatible Ethernet cabling. Depending on the camera requirement, systems may use PoE, PoE+ or higher-power PoE standards for devices such as PTZ, Multi-Sensor and other higher-consumption cameras.
Managed switches provide greater control over larger surveillance networks. Features such as VLANs, port monitoring, traffic management, link aggregation, STP/RSTP and network diagnostics can help create a more structured and manageable CCTV network.
For warehouses, industrial sites, campuses and large properties, fibre uplinks can connect switches over distances beyond normal copper Ethernet limitations. SFP or SFP+ modules can be selected according to the required fibre type, speed and transmission distance.
AZTÖR also considers the total PoE budget of the switch. A switch may have enough physical ports for all cameras but still be unsuitable if the connected devices require more PoE power than the switch can provide.
Outdoor cabinets and industrial environments require additional consideration for operating temperature, ventilation, enclosure protection, power quality and surge protection. Industrial-grade switches may be recommended where environmental conditions require them.
Existing CCTV networks can also be upgraded where cameras frequently disconnect, bandwidth is insufficient, switches are overloaded or additional IP cameras need to be added. AZTÖR can assess the network before replacing equipment unnecessarily.

A CCTV Network Switch should be selected using camera bandwidth and PoE load calculations, not simply the number of available ports. PTZ Cameras, Multi-Sensor Cameras and other high-power devices can require significantly more PoE capacity than standard fixed cameras. Uplink bandwidth, fibre requirements, network topology and future expansion should also be considered.
