Safety Photocells

Safety Photocells

Safety photocells are an important part of an automatic gate safety system. Installed in suitable positions around the entrance, they use a photoelectric beam or manufacturer-specific detection arrangement to identify the presence of a vehicle, person or obstruction within the protected area and communicate that condition to the gate controller.

A photocell does not physically stop a gate by itself. It sends a safety input to the automation control board, which then responds according to its programmed logic. Depending on the gate system and operating phase, this may prevent closing, stop movement or cause the gate to reopen.

AZTÖR installs safety photocells for automatic sliding gates, swing gates, cantilever gates, folding and bi-folding gates, trackless gates and suitable heavy-duty commercial or industrial gate systems. The number and position of photocells are determined by the gate movement, entrance geometry and required safety arrangement rather than simply installing one pair at every site.

For sliding gates, photocells can help protect the vehicle passage and closing area. Additional protection may be required around other hazardous movement zones, particularly where a sliding gate travels beside a wall, fence or accessible area.

Swing gates require careful consideration because each leaf moves through a large arc. Photocell positioning should reflect the actual sweep of the gate, vehicle stopping position, pedestrian movement and whether the leaves open inward or outward.

Correct alignment is essential. A photocell transmitter and receiver must maintain reliable communication, while reflective systems require the appropriate reflector arrangement. Poor mounting, unstable posts, incorrect alignment, damaged wiring or unsuitable positioning can lead to intermittent gate faults.

Outdoor gate photocells in the UAE are exposed to heat, dust, sand and direct sunlight. Product selection and installation therefore need to consider the manufacturer's environmental rating, operating temperature, enclosure design and actual mounting location. Regular cleaning is also important because contamination can interfere with optical performance.

AZTÖR works with compatible safety accessories from established gate automation manufacturers such as FAAC, CAME, BFT, Nice and Benincà, together with other suitable systems used in UAE and GCC gate installations. Where an existing gate uses another brand, compatibility with its control board is checked before replacement.

Wired photocells are commonly used where suitable cabling is available. Depending on the selected automation platform, wireless or simplified installation options may also be available for applications where running new cables is difficult. The appropriate solution depends on the gate controller and manufacturer.

Safety photocells should not be treated as the only protection required for every automatic gate. Depending on the gate design and risk areas, photocells may need to work together with safety edges, obstacle detection, vehicle loops, warning devices and appropriate control settings.

AZTÖR also troubleshoots existing gate photocell faults. Typical symptoms include a gate that refuses to close, closes only in manual mode, reopens unexpectedly, stops intermittently or shows a safety-input fault. We inspect alignment, lenses, wiring, power supply, terminals, control-board inputs and the photocell itself before recommending replacement.

Bypassing a faulty safety photocell simply to keep an automatic gate operating can remove an important protective function. AZTÖR recommends identifying and correcting the fault rather than permanently disabling a safety device.

AZTÖR provides gate safety photocell installation, replacement, alignment, repair and preventive maintenance across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain, with suitable gate automation support available across the wider GCC.

Photocell quantity, type and mounting position must be determined from the actual gate movement and entrance layout. A single pair of photocells should not automatically be assumed to protect every potential hazard area. AZTÖR checks the gate type, opening and closing movement, vehicle path, pedestrian exposure, controller compatibility and existing safety devices during a free site inspection before confirming the appropriate arrangement.

Frequently Asked Questions

A safety photocell is a photoelectric detection device connected to an automatic gate controller. It detects an obstruction or presence within its protected beam or detection area and sends that information to the gate control system.

Depending on the product, a transmitter sends an optical or infrared signal to a receiver or reflector. When the protected signal is interrupted, the photocell changes its output to the gate controller.

No. The photocell sends a signal to the control board. The controller determines whether the gate should stop, remain open, prevent closing or reopen according to its programmed safety logic.

Yes. AZTÖR provides a free site inspection for applicable gate safety and automation requirements to check the gate movement, photocell positions, controller, wiring and other safety devices.

Photocells are commonly used with automatic sliding, swing, cantilever, folding, bi-folding, trackless and suitable heavy-duty gates.

There is no universal number for every gate. The required quantity and positions depend on the gate type, movement zones, entrance geometry, vehicle and pedestrian exposure and the overall safety design.

Their positions depend on the gate and entrance. They may protect the clear vehicle passage and closing area, while additional protection may be required around other accessible movement zones.

Placement should consider the complete sweep of the gate leaves, opening direction, vehicle position and pedestrian movement. The correct arrangement should be determined from the actual entrance.

AZTÖR works with compatible safety accessories from manufacturers such as FAAC, CAME, BFT, Nice and Benincà, together with other suitable gate automation systems available in the UAE and GCC.

Often, yes, but electrical and control-board compatibility must be checked. A replacement should not be selected only because it looks similar to the existing photocell.

Sometimes. Many control systems can accept suitable safety inputs, but voltage, contacts, monitoring requirements and controller compatibility must be verified before installation.

Yes. Wired photocells are widely used and can provide reliable operation where suitable cabling is available.

Wireless or reduced-wiring solutions are available for certain automation systems. Availability and suitability depend on the selected manufacturer, controller and entrance.

A blocked, dirty, misaligned or faulty photocell is one possible cause because the control board may be receiving an active safety signal. Wiring, controller settings and other safety inputs can produce similar symptoms and should also be checked.

The system may be detecting an obstruction or receiving an intermittent safety input. Photocell alignment, dirt, wiring faults, movement of mounting posts and other safety devices should be inspected.

Environmental conditions can affect some optical devices if the product, positioning or installation is unsuitable. Outdoor photocells should be selected and mounted according to the manufacturer's requirements.

Heavy contamination on the optical surfaces can interfere with reliable detection. This is one reason periodic inspection and cleaning are particularly useful in UAE outdoor environments.

Permanently bypassing a safety device can remove an important protective function. AZTÖR recommends diagnosing and repairing or replacing the faulty component instead of leaving the gate operating without the intended protection.

Not necessarily. Depending on the gate and risk areas, a complete safety arrangement may also require safety edges, obstacle detection, vehicle detection, warning devices and appropriate controller settings.

A photocell uses optical detection across or around the gate entrance, while an inductive loop installed in the roadway detects suitable vehicles above the loop. They perform different functions and can be used together.

A photocell provides non-contact detection within its protected area. A safety edge is fitted to a hazardous gate edge and responds when the edge encounters an obstruction according to the selected system.

Yes, where the gate controller and entrance configuration support them. AZTÖR can assess existing safety coverage and recommend additional protection where appropriate.

Yes. The lenses and housings should be kept clean, alignment should remain correct and wiring, mounting and gate response should be periodically tested.

Wiring, alignment, connection and installation faults may be repairable. If the photocell itself has failed or deteriorated, replacement is often the more practical solution.

Yes. AZTÖR can troubleshoot suitable third-party gate systems subject to controller compatibility, equipment condition and spare-part availability.

Yes. AZTÖR provides gate safety troubleshooting, photocell replacement and automation repair according to site requirements and technician availability.

AZTÖR provides gate photocell installation, replacement and maintenance across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain, with suitable support available across the wider GCC.
