Battery Backup

Battery Backup

A battery backup system can help keep a compatible automatic gate or barrier operational when the normal mains power supply is interrupted. Depending on the automation system, backup power may allow authorised opening and closing for a limited number of cycles or support a defined emergency operating sequence.

Battery backup is particularly useful where loss of gate operation could disrupt access to villas, residential communities, commercial properties, warehouses, staff entrances, security gates and other controlled vehicle entrances.

Not every gate motor can accept a battery simply by connecting one to the control panel. The operator voltage, charging circuit, battery interface, control board and manufacturer's approved accessories must all be compatible. Some automation systems have dedicated battery modules, while others require a separate manufacturer-approved backup arrangement.

AZTÖR installs battery backup for suitable sliding gates, swing gates, cantilever gates, folding and bi-folding gates, trackless gates, automatic barriers and other compatible gate automation systems.

For existing gates, AZTÖR first identifies the motor and control panel before recommending backup equipment. A free site inspection can be used to check the operator, control-board compatibility, electrical supply, available enclosure space, existing batteries, charging system and the operational requirement during a power failure.

Backup runtime should not be described as a fixed number of hours or gate cycles without considering the actual system. Available operation depends on battery capacity and condition, gate motor consumption, gate weight and resistance, frequency of operation, connected accessories, battery age and the duration of the power interruption.

A heavy industrial gate can require substantially more energy than a small residential entrance. Battery capacity and backup strategy therefore need to be matched to the actual automation rather than selecting the same battery arrangement for every gate.

AZTÖR works with compatible gate automation and backup accessories from established manufacturers including FAAC, CAME, BFT, Nice and Benincà, together with other technically suitable systems used across the UAE and GCC. Where manufacturer-specific battery kits are available, the appropriate solution is selected according to the installed operator and control board.

Battery backup should also be distinguished from manual emergency release. Many automatic gate operators provide a mechanical release that allows the gate to be operated manually when power is unavailable. Battery backup aims to retain powered operation for a limited period, while manual release provides another means of access where applicable.

For sites where continuous access is particularly important, battery backup can form part of a wider power-continuity strategy. Depending on the project, this may include suitable UPS equipment, standby generators or other electrical backup systems designed by the relevant project professionals. Compatibility with the gate automation must be checked before connection.

Battery condition deteriorates over time. A system can appear normal while mains power is present but fail immediately during an outage if the batteries have lost capacity. Preventive maintenance should therefore include inspection of the batteries, charger, terminals, wiring and actual backup operation.

UAE environmental conditions also matter. Excessive heat can shorten battery service life, so batteries and charging equipment should be installed according to the manufacturer's temperature and enclosure requirements and should not be unnecessarily exposed to direct solar heat.

AZTÖR can diagnose existing gate backup problems including batteries that no longer hold charge, gates that stop during an outage, charging faults, damaged wiring, incorrect replacement batteries and control-panel backup faults.

AZTÖR provides automatic gate battery backup installation, battery replacement, testing and troubleshooting across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain, with suitable gate automation support available across the wider GCC.

Battery backup capability varies significantly between gate automation systems. Battery voltage, capacity, charger, control-board compatibility and expected backup operation must be confirmed for the installed motor. The number of available gate cycles during an outage cannot be guaranteed from battery capacity alone because gate load, mechanical resistance, battery condition, connected accessories and operating frequency all affect performance. AZTÖR confirms the suitable backup arrangement after a free site inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions

A battery backup provides temporary electrical power to a compatible gate automation system when the normal mains electricity supply is unavailable.

It can if the gate automation has a suitable, charged and compatible battery backup system. Otherwise, a manual emergency release may need to be used where provided.

Yes. AZTÖR provides a free site inspection for applicable gate automation requirements to check the motor, control panel, backup compatibility, batteries and charging system.

Compatible backup systems are available for many sliding, swing, cantilever, folding and other automatic gates, but availability depends on the installed operator and control panel.

AZTÖR works with compatible automation and backup accessories from manufacturers including FAAC, CAME, BFT, Nice and Benincà, together with other suitable systems used in the UAE and GCC.

Often, yes, if the existing operator and control board support a compatible backup system. The installed equipment should be identified before batteries are selected.

No. Battery voltage, capacity, charging requirements, connector arrangement and control-board compatibility must match the automation system.

There is no universal number. Available cycles depend on battery capacity and condition, gate motor consumption, gate weight and resistance, connected accessories and how frequently the gate is operated.

Backup time varies considerably according to the automation and usage. A lightly used gate may remain available longer than a gate repeatedly operating throughout an outage.

Compatible systems can automatically transfer to battery operation. The exact behaviour depends on the selected operator and controller.

Compatible gate backup systems normally use an appropriate charging circuit while mains power is available. The exact charging arrangement is manufacturer specific.

Powered gate operation may stop. Access would then depend on restoration of power, another approved backup source or the gate operator's manual emergency release.

Battery backup can maintain powered gate operation for a limited period. Manual release mechanically disengages or releases the operator so the gate can be moved manually according to its design.

If the gate controller, receiver and required accessories remain powered by the compatible backup system, remote operation may continue. This depends on the automation design.

Only if the GSM controller and required gate control equipment also receive suitable backup power. Backing up the motor alone does not automatically power every connected accessory.

It depends on how the complete access-control system is powered. Readers, controllers, locks, intercoms and communication equipment may require their own suitable backup provision.

Yes, certain automatic barrier systems support compatible battery backup. The specific barrier and controller must be checked.

Some commercial and industrial automation can support backup arrangements, but larger gates have greater power requirements. The correct solution must be selected according to the actual operator and required continuity.

A suitable UPS may be considered for certain systems, but motor starting characteristics, electrical load, control electronics and manufacturer requirements must be assessed before connecting one.

A correctly designed standby electrical supply can potentially power gate automation, but voltage, frequency, changeover and equipment compatibility should be addressed as part of the site's electrical design.

Battery service life depends on battery technology, temperature, charging conditions, usage and maintenance. Condition testing is more reliable than assuming a fixed replacement life for every installation.

Yes. High temperatures can accelerate battery ageing. Installation location, ventilation and manufacturer temperature limits should be considered carefully.

Common signs include reduced backup time, the gate stopping during a power failure, battery warnings, charging faults or batteries that no longer maintain adequate voltage or capacity.

The backup batteries may be discharged, deteriorated, disconnected or not charging correctly, or the backup circuit may have another fault.

Yes, where the existing charger, controller and backup system remain suitable. Replacement batteries must have the correct specification for the system.

Yes. AZTÖR can inspect battery condition, charging operation, connections and the gate's behaviour when mains power is removed.

Yes. Depending on the system, faults may involve batteries, chargers, control boards, wiring, connectors or power supplies and can be diagnosed accordingly.

Yes. Periodic power-failure testing helps confirm that the batteries and charging system will operate when they are actually needed.

Yes. Preventive maintenance can include battery condition, charging voltage, terminals, wiring, control-panel operation and functional backup testing according to the system.

AZTÖR provides gate battery backup installation, replacement and troubleshooting across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain, with suitable automation support across the wider GCC.
