Fire Rated Rolling Shutters
Fire rated rolling shutters are specialist passive fire-protection closures designed to help maintain fire compartmentation across openings that cannot remain permanently closed. During normal building operation the opening remains accessible, while the shutter is designed to close under the specified fire-emergency sequence.
These shutters are commonly used between fire compartments and at suitable openings in warehouses, factories, shopping centres, commercial buildings, service areas, car parks, logistics facilities and other projects where the approved fire and life-safety design requires a rated closure.
A fire rated shutter is fundamentally different from a standard GI rolling shutter. Fire performance applies to the tested complete shutter assembly and configuration—not simply to the galvanized steel curtain. The curtain, guides, bottom rail, barrel, brackets, motor, release mechanism, control system, fixings and installation arrangement must correspond with the selected tested and documented system.
UAE Civil Defence documentation specifically recognises roller steel doors and door/shutter assemblies within products acceptable to Civil Defence through recognised conformity-certification routes. The required system must therefore be selected against the project's approved fire and life-safety requirements rather than assuming that every steel rolling shutter is fire rated.
The required fire-resistance duration is project specific. Depending on the approved system and fire strategy, ratings may be expressed in minutes or hours. The exact rating supplied must be supported by valid test and certification documentation for the selected shutter configuration.
Fire shutter systems available in the UAE market include tested steel rolling shutter assemblies with fire integrity ratings extending to several hours in specific configurations. For example, UAE manufacturer NAFFCO publishes fire shutter systems tested to standards including ANSI/UL 10B and BS 476 Part 22, with ratings and maximum dimensions dependent on the particular tested configuration.
AZTÖR therefore does not apply a generic 60-minute, 120-minute or 240-minute rating to every fire shutter. We first review the required rating, opening dimensions, approved drawings, project specification and authority requirements before identifying the appropriate documented system.
Fire shutters can be connected to the building fire alarm or another approved fire activation arrangement according to the selected system and project fire strategy. Upon receiving the required signal, the shutter follows its designed emergency closing sequence.
Depending on the tested system, activation arrangements may include a fire alarm signal, thermal fusible link, heat or smoke detection interface, delay control or other approved components. These functions are system specific and must follow the approved fire-protection design.
Fail-safe or controlled gravity closing is available on certain fire shutter systems. The shutter's behaviour during fire conditions, mains failure and alarm activation must follow the tested system design rather than being improvised during installation.
Manual controls may also be provided for normal operation where the approved system permits them. Suitable systems can incorporate local push-button controls and an emergency manual operating arrangement, while fire-emergency operation retains priority according to the approved control logic.
Where a fire shutter interfaces with the fire alarm system, coordination between the shutter contractor, fire-alarm contractor, consultant and relevant fire-safety parties is essential. Signal type, cause-and-effect logic, monitoring and commissioning responsibilities should be established before final connection.
AZTÖR provides a free site inspection for applicable fire shutter requirements. We can assess the opening dimensions, headroom, side clearances, fixing structure, shutter location and automation requirements and coordinate the proposed solution against the project's documented fire-rating requirement.
Existing standard rolling shutters cannot simply be upgraded with a fire alarm connection and then described as fire rated. Adding a motor, fusible link or fire-alarm interface does not create a certified fire-resisting assembly. Where a rated closure is required, an appropriately tested and documented complete system must be used.
Likewise, changing critical components of an existing fire-rated shutter can affect the validity of its documented performance. Replacement curtains, guides, motors, controllers, release mechanisms and other safety-critical components should be compatible with the approved shutter system and its certification requirements.
Fire shutters require regular inspection and maintenance because mechanical damage, obstructed guides, altered controls or failed activation components can prevent correct emergency operation. Maintenance should include the shutter mechanism and the applicable fire activation and control functions within the agreed scope.
AZTÖR provides fire rated rolling shutter supply, installation coordination, automation, inspection, repair and preventive maintenance across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain, with suitable project support available across the wider GCC.

A fire rating applies to the tested complete shutter assembly and its approved installation configuration. Curtain material alone does not make a shutter fire rated. Required rating, dimensions, guides, supports, motor, controller, activation method, fixing substrate and installation details must correspond with the selected system's valid test and certification documentation and the project's approved fire and life-safety requirements. AZTÖR provides a free site inspection before proposing the appropriate system.
